Invitation for the Infrastructour

INFRASTRUCTOURS was a guided bus tour to internet infrastructure in the north of the Netherlands.

In September 2014 Google announced that it would extend its cloud by building a new data center in the Eemshaven in Groningen. This was the occasion to organize an Internet Infrastructour, a guided bus tour of the physical side of the cloud that took place on the 13th of December 2015.

The tour took participants to and through the Eemshaven, the port and industrial zone where the data center is being built. The tour was focused on ways to read the landscape to see the otherwise unnoticeable infrastructures. Special attention was paid the elements in the Groningen environment that make a data center thrive. These elements include the presence of sufficient power, fiber-optic lines and a hospitable climate (in terms of weather, politics and taxes).

The Infrastructour was a project commissioned and organized by project space SIGN in Groningen.
